Nestled on the north bank of the Thames, Caversham is fastly becoming one of the most desirable areas to live in the UK.
It is with sheer delight to report that the Elizabeth Line is now open. Reading station is one of the largest rail hubs in Britain and already has a direct Great Western service to London Paddington in just under 30 minutes. Direct connections from Reading across the UK are as good as it gets. South Devon is two hours and twenty minutes away – whilst Manchester is just over three hours. Its no wonder that Reading is a property hot spot. With such good connections to the city it’s no wonder that 7% of Londoners think that Reading is part of the capital.
Caversham’s friendly village atmosphere feels similar to that of any small London village hub, with its own character and unique charm. Caversham however offers significantly ample space to walk the dog and enjoy the stunning English countryside which is directly on its doorstep.
Despite being only half an hour from Paddington, the sprawling Oxfordshire and Berkshire countryside is an easy drive away – where you’ll find rare gems in the form of renowned excellent country pubs. Caversham itself is full of bespoke cafes and independent shops on the local High Street. There is a lively restaurant scene throughout Caversham and further down the riverbank lies The Thames Lido – a former Edwardian bathhouse that has been refurbished and is now described as an urban retreat. This elegant complex retains much of its original architecture and offers plenty of indulgent treats from massages to memorable meals at the on-site bistro. In the winter there is a winter wonderland and a pop-up ice rink, with plenty of cozy winter warmer events to mingle at. During the summer months there are seasonal beer festivals, open air movie events and Caversham’s own Regatta.
Golfers can enjoy Caversham Heath Golf Course and The Club at Mapledurham, both 18-hole courses for golfers of all levels. Both venues have formal clubhouses that buzz with social activity all year round. Mapledurham also offers comprehensive gym and sauna facilities. There is a famous bowling club on Fry’s Island (or De Montfort Island as it is sometimes known) that lies between Reading and Caversham and must exclusively be reached by boat.
Schools
In and around Caversham there is a wide choice of excellent primary schools with outstanding ofsted achievements.
The nearby secondary schools have excellent reputations, from Highdown School and Sixth Form Centre, to two grammar schools: Kendrick Grammar and Reading Boys, to several highly rated private schools: The Abbey, Leighton Park School, St Josephs College, Reading Blue Coat, The Oratory and Shiplake College.

Travel
Reading station is one of the largest rail hubs in Britain – and direct connections from Reading across the UK are as good as it gets. South Devon is two hours and twenty minutes away – whilst Manchester is just over three hours. Once the Elizabeth line opens, Reading will be a mere twenty-three minutes direct into Tottenham Court Road.
On the roads, Reading itself is off the M4 and has consequently great road connections to the M4, M40, and A329m that link to the M3. Driving out of Caversham, you can easily reach the well known Thameside villages of Henley on Thames, Wargrave and Pangbourne – all of whom offer more to see of the bounteous Berkshire countryside.
Caversham was recently praised in The Sunday Times as one of the best places to live in the UK 2020, described as a ‘prestigious suburb in the picturesque county of Berkshire’.
